STATISTICS REFLECTING THE OVERALL NUMBER OF CASES HEARD IN JUVENILE COURT IN THE STATE OF OHIO IN 1978 ARE PRESENTED, INCLUDING CASES COVERED BY THE NEW LEGAL DEFINITION OF UNRULY BEHAVIOR ACCORDING TO OHIO LAW.
Abstract
PUBLISHED BY THE OFFICE OF DATA PROCESSING OF THE OHIO YOUTH COMMISSION, THESE STATISTICS PRESENT A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND STATUS OFFENSES IN THE STATE OF OHIO, INCLUDING OFFENSES DEFINED BY THE 1969 JUVENILE COURT LAW UNDER THE HEADING OF UNRULY CASES (I.E., ACTS COMMITTED BY JUVENILES WHICH ARE TROUBLESOME TO SOCIETY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY CRIMES). THE STATISTICAL TABLES COMPRISING THIS REPORT REFER TO SIX BROAD CATEGORIES OF JUVENILE COURT CASES: DELINQUENCY CASES (INCLUDING ONLY THOSE ACTS WHICH WOULD BE CRIMES IF COMMITTED BY ADULTS); DEPENDENCY AND NEGLECT CASES; SPECIAL SERVICE CASES; JUVENILE TRAFFIC CASES; UNRULY CASES; ADULT CASES (THE LATTER DEFINED AS OFFENSES COMMITTED BY ADULTS WHICH ARE IN SOME WAY DETRIMENTAL TO THE WELL-BEING OF JUVENILES). AMONG THE TRENDS REFLECTED IN THESE JUVENILE COURT STATISTICS ARE A 3 PERCENT INCREASE IN THE OVERALL NUMBER OF CASES HEARD IN JUVENILE COURT IN 1978 OVER 1977; A DECREASE OF 4 PERCENT IN UNRULY CASES, OFFSET, HOWEVER, BY A 2 PERCENT INCREASE IN DELINQUENCY CASES; MEDIUM AND SMALL-SIZED COUNTIES IN OHIO ACCOUNT FOR A LARGER PERCENT OF JUVENILE CASES. THIRTY STATISTICAL TABLES, CLASSIFIED BY A VARIETY OF COURT-RELATED AND DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES, AND ONE APPENDIX, CONTAINING A GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN THIS REPORT, ARE PROVIDED.
