NEW APPROACHES TO DEALING WITH TRUANCY IN CALIFORNIA AND IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINN., ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
A DIRECTOR OF THE MINNEAPOLIS DEPARTMENT OF COURT SERVICES PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A STUDY INITIATED IN 1978 TO IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUANTS, AND DESCRIBES A NEW PROGRAM IN WHICH SCHOOLS REFER TRUANTS FROM THE FIRST THROUGH THE SIXTH GRADES TO THE COMMUNITY BUREAU OF SOCIAL SERVICES BEFORE REQUESTING COURT INTERVENTION. THEN, A CONSULTANT FOR THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS (CALIF.) EXPLAINS THE PROBLEMS THAT LED TO THE PASSING OF THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REVIEW BOARD BILL OF 1975 WHICH IS INTENDED TO FACILITATE THE RECOGNITION OF ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS EARLY ENOUGH TO ENHANCE THE CHANCES OF SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT BY COMMUNITY SERVICES. FINALLY, A CALIFORNIA JUVENILE COURT JUDGE DESCRIBES THE TRADITIONAL ROLE OF THE COURT IN HANDLING TRUANTS AND REVIEWS A PROGRAM WHICH INVOLVES A CLOSE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE COURTS AND THE SCHOOLS IN ENFORCING SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AS A FORM OF PROBATION FOR TRUANTS. THE AUDIOTAPE CASSETTE IS SUITABLE FOR GENERAL AUDIENCES. A TABLE OF CONTENTS IS INCLUDED, BUT OTHER SUPPORTING MATERIALS ARE NOT PROVIDED. FOR RELATED TAPES, SEE NCJ 69273-83 AND 69285.
