Abstract
THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM INVOLVES THE UNIFORM COMPILATION, CLASSIFICATION, AND ANALYSIS OF CRIME STATISTICS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FEDERAL SYSTEM OF UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING. CRIME INDEX STATISTICS (INTENDED TO MEASURE THE TREND AND DISTRIBUTION OF CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES AND BASED ON THE OFFENSES MURDER, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, FELONIOUS ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY. AND MOTOR-VEHICLE THEFT) INDICATED FOR WEST VIRGINIA AN INDEX OF 2,264.8 OFFENSES PER 100,000 POPULATION. THE CLEARANCE RATE FOR THE INDEX OFFENSES AMOUNTED TO 23.9 PERCENT. THERE WERE 164.3 VIOLENT CRIMES PER 100,000 POPULATION IN WEST VIRGINIA WITH A CLEARANCE RATE OF 67.2 PERCENT. IN ADDITION TO THE OVERALL CRIME INDEX, THE REPORT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING MAJOR SECTIONS FOR THE YEAR 1979: (1) A CLASSIFICATION OF INDIVIDUAL OFFENSES, (2) THE NUMBER OF ARRESTS CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO TYPE OF OFFENSE, AND (3) THE WEST VIRGINIA CRIME INDEX REPORT FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL COUNTY. TABLES AND A GLOSSARY OF TERMS ARE PROVIDED.
