Abstract

It consists of four sections. The first covers parole and mandatory release population movement breakdowns, including year-end population figures, the number of entries, and the number of removals. The second updates selected paroling authority characteristics. The third section explores relationships of parole and mandatory release data within the context of overall criminal justice system statistics, including state populations, violent crime levels, jail and prison populations, and rates of use of parole and mandatory release. The fourth section examines longer term trends in parole and mandatory release in comparison to total procedures explored in the national survey. Data were obtained from all 50 State Parole/Correctional Agencies as well as the District of Columbia, the U.S. Parole Commission, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The report appendixes include data tables, table notes, agency notes, and reference works cited. (Author abstract modified).
