Hearings before the Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control in the House of Representatives during the 96th Congress are presented which dealt with drug abuse and use in the Memphis-Shelby County, Tenn., schools.
Abstract
The speakers include a school principal, the superintndent of schools, students, and the special-agent-in-charge of the Memphis Drug Enforcement Administration. Also testifying were police officers, the director of the Memphis City Schools Mental Health Center, the director of the alcohol and drug program of the Memphis Mental Health Institute, a juvenile court judge, and others. The drug abuse problems in this school system are generally viewed to be typical of those in others in the United States. A number of prevention and treatment programs is discussed, including the assignment of police in schools, and alcohol and drug education classes in school health programs.
