Abstract
COMBINING SHORT DRAMATIC SCENES, ANIMATED SEQUENCES, FILM MONTAGE, AND DOCUMENTARY FOOTAGE, THE FILM IS INTENDED TO HELP THE VIEWER RECOGNIZE COMMON SOURCES OF STRESS, ASSESS HIS OR HER OWN CAPACITY TO TOLERATE STRESS, AND BECOME MORE AWARE OF ALTERNATIVE MEANS FOR COPING WITH STRESS. THE FILM SHOWS A STRESS REDUCTION SEMINAR CONDUCTED BY DR. JAMES MANUSO AND COVERS THE FOLLOWING MAJOR TOPICS IN STRESS RESEARCH: THE FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE; THE RESEARCH OF HANS SELYE WHO FIRST IDENTIFIED AND CATALOGUED THE BODY'S BIOCHEMICAL RESPONSES TO STRESS; THE CONCEPT OF 'EUSTRESS' OR THE VALUE OF STRESS IN PROMOTING CREATIVITY AND PRODUCTIVITY; A REVIEW OF THE MOST WIDELY USED STRESS-CONTROL TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING EXERCISE, MEDITATION, BIOFEEDBACK TRANING, AND PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION; AND A STUDY OF TYPE A AND TYPE B PERSONALITIES AND THEIR RELATION TO HEART DISEASE. SOME COMMON SOURCES OF ON-THE-JOB STRESS ARE DEPICTED IN THE FILM INCLUDING OVERWORK, CONFLICTING DEMANDS BY SUPERIORS, TIME PRESSURES, AND OFFICE POLITICS. TWO BUSINESS EXECUTIVES EMPHASIZE THAT ULTIMATELY, STRESS REDUCTION IS AN INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY.
