As part of a series of seven courses on prevention of violence and vandalism in schools, this three part course examines low-cost approaches to crime prevention through environmental design.
Abstract
The course's main idea is that indoor and outdoor spaces can be designed so that they are less vulnerable to vandalism, do not provide opportunities for crime, and do not support fear of crime. In the introductory session, a slide show presentation demonstrates the relationships among physical design characteristics, school security, and a positive school climate. Strategies to improve the design of existing schools are discussed. A process for school design assessment is presented in the second unit, in which small groups work on a design problem using a detailed design accountability checklist. The final seminar provides an advanced treatment of rationales and approaches for changing physical design, particularly modifications that can be implemented by school people themselves. Basic design concepts and strategies are outlined, along with environmental and behavioral principles which affect a design. Slides and other materials provide examples of specific problems and solutions. An agenda with time limits, worksheets, background information, and references accompany each unit.
