This trainer's guide presents the content, activities, and background information for a course on school discipline as part of a curriculum designed to prevent and reduce violence and other disruption in schools.
Abstract
The 4.75-hour course is part of a 7-course series intended for teachers, school administrators, students, parents, youth advocates, school security personnel, and community organization representatives. The course's instructional objectives are to develop awareness that discipline is a problem solving process, to make disciplinarians familiar with relevant legal cases and issues, and to illustrate ways to develop effective discipline policies. Additional objectives are to present a variety of discipline methods and to provide examples of effective inschool discipline programs. The course's five modules are taught through lecture, slide presentation, written exercises, group discussions, and small group activities. For each module, the training guide includes a synopsis, a summary of content and major learning activities, and a detailed step-by-step narrative which includes directions for the trainer. Lists of materials and equipment needed, additional readings covering selected parts of each training module, and a list of six audiovisual resources are included. For other trainer's guides, see NCJ 69756 and 69758-62. For participants' guides, see NCJ 69749-55.
