This trainer's guide presents the content, activities, and background information for a course on effecting positive, prosocial change in school climate to reduce violence, vandalism, and disruption.
Abstract
The 5.5-hour course is part of a 7-hour course curriculum intended for teachers, school administrators, students, parents, youth advocates, school security personnel, and community organization representatives. The course's instructional objectives are to define school climate, to practice assessing it, and to discuss ways to improve climate in participants' schools. Additional objectives are to discuss school employees' stress and ways to reduce it, to show the importance of student involvement in deterring vandalism, and to examine the benefits and nature of law-related education programs. The course's four modules are taught through lectures, slide presentations, small group discussions, and written exercises. For each module, the training guide includes a synopsis, a summary of content and major learning activities, and a detailed step-by-step narrative which includes directions for the trainer. Lists of materials and equipment needed, additional readings covering selected parts of each training module, and a list of three audiovisual resources are included. For others trainer's guides, see NCJ 69756, 69757, and 69759-62. For participants' guides, see NCJ 69749-55.
