This trainer's guide presents the content, activities, and background information for a course on designing or modifying a school's indoor and outdoor spaces to reduce violence, vandalism, and disruption.
Abstract
The 2.83-hour course is part of a 7-part curriculum aimed at helping schools prevent or reduce violence and vandalism. The curriculum, is intended for teachers, school administrators, students, parents, youth advocates, school security personnel, and community organization representatives. The course's instructional objectives are to introduce the environmental approach to security and climate enhancement and to present three specific strategies: natural access control, natural surveillance, and territorial reinforcement. Additional objectives are to provide a rationale and procedure for dealing with potential problems in the school environment and to suggest specific approaches to enhance environmental safety and security. The course's three modules are taught using slides, lecture, and small group problem solving exercises. For each module, the training guide includes a synopsis, a summary of content and major learning activities, and a detailed step-by-step narrative which includes directions for the trainer. Lists of materials and equipment needed, additional readings that cover selected parts of each training module, and one audiovisual resource are included.
