Virginia's traffic accident data for 1979 are presented in this annual survey.
Abstract
Data are included on traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities; and on types, causes, conditions, times and places of accidents. In summary, 217,733 vehicles were involved in 128,805 crashes; 59,313 persons were injured in 40,328 crashes; and 1,014 persons were killed in 920 fatal crashes. In 40.6 percent of all fatal crashes, excessive speed or speed too fast for conditions was a contributing factor, and 33.0 percent involved drinking drivers. Of the 1,305 vehicles involved in fatal crashes, 5.5 percent were mechanically defective. The fatality rate of 2.65 deaths per one hundred million miles was an all-time low. Data are presented in tabular and graphic form, and comparison data for previous years (back to 1950) are included.
