Topics relate to the challenges facing those with parole and probation responsibilities and to techniques and approaches for increasing the effectiveness of those officials in meeting their responsbilities. Recent efforts in prison rehabilitation are discussed, together with new developments in the Kansas penal system. Welfare services and their relationship to the total parole and probation programs are examined, with emphasis on child welfare needs and services. The functions of probation and parole are challenged as needing to respond to a changing society. The probation or parole agent's role in managing complaints about probation and parole is considered, together with other aspects of the agents' duties, such as counseling through individual or group approaches. Community programs for delinquency are addressed with examples of delinquent children hurt by uncooperative institutions. Treatment and supervision of the alcoholic offender are explored, along with an experiment in self-help for the alcoholic and an introduction to role playing. Finally, the use of volunteers in the parole process is reported and problems back home as identified by participants are argued in a discussion format.
