Consumer protection is the focus of this film for junior high through adult audiences on how to obtain competent repair work and what to do if you think you are the victim of fraud.
Abstract
Narrated by an auto mechanic, the film makes the following suggestions for car owners: let the auto mechanic diagnose the problem and provide specific information; keep a copy; and always insist on an itemized bill showing parts and labor, if costly repairs are anticipated, call two or three other garages for estimates, and take your car to a diagnostic center to learn what repairs may be necessary. To find a good garage, the film suggests (1) calling the Better Business Bureau and asking about the garage's reputation, (2) looking for mechanics certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, and (3) looking for the signs of the Automotive Service Council and the American Automobile Association. Finally, if a garage does not give satisfaction, customers can always contact the Consumer Affairs Department, the Better Business Bureau, or Small Claims Court.
