This report describes the initial statewide implementation of Rhode Island's inservice training program for correctional personnel, including evaluations and recommendations.
Abstract
The planning and developmental stage I of the training project identified needs pertaining to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of correctional practitioners. Through the establishment of the Correctional Training Center, programs were undertaken to meet the identified training needs. The center, during the operational stage II of the project, established and will develop the maximum use of university, community, departmental, and correctional resources to provide training services. The center's training approach integrates the knowledge of the behavioral sciences with the problem-centered approach of workshops and seminars. The project is designed to provide a comprehensive, uniform, and continuous training program for personnel having direct contact with offenders. Central to the implementation of the operational stage II is the graphic model inservice training and educational structure that permits employee training opportunities from the time of entry. There are three levels of training: orientation and refresher training, the achievement of specific attitudinal and behavioral change to enhance performance effectiveness, and the fulfillment of academic degree requirements appropriate for certain correctional positions. Recommendations are included.
