Fifteen topics that can be used by correctional training officers in staff training are discussed under the general headings of 'perspectives,' 'substance,' and 'method.'
Abstract
This volume is not considered a textbook of the subject matter but rather a resource to be used by the instructor as he sees fit. Presentations that give perspective to work in corrections consider the subjects of the relationship between 'justice' and socioeconomic and political power, the objectives of the correctional process, and cultural factors that influence human behavior. Essays dealing with the 'substance' of corrections treat the structure of institutions; research and change; institutional programs; counseling; people, environment, and communication; the role of the correctional officer; a new look at custody; non-institutional programs, probation; and non-institutional programs, and parole. 'Methods' discussed are pedagogical: the nature of problemsolving and creative thinking are analyzed and illustrated with provocative games and exercises; the tools and applications of programmed instruction are discussed as significant enhancements to traditional teaching approaches. Suggested readings are listed for each presentation.
