The guide follows the book's chapter organization and provides learning objectives, a vocabulary exercise, a chapter outline, and self-tests for each chapter in the text. The learning objectives are intended to be read before the chapter and reviewed after studying the chapter. A list of key words and terms for each chapter is provided with blank lines so that their definitions can be written beside them. The main points of each chapter are presented in outline form. The self-tests are both multiple choice and true-or-false. Answers to the tests are provided at the back of the study guide. To assist in career planning, samples of a letter of inquiry and a resume are given. Also included is the introduction to 'The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society,' a report of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, as well as discussion/essay questions to test understanding of the introduction. Subjects covered by the manual are an overview of the criminal justice system, police, prosecution and defense, courts, corrections, probations and parole, and the future of the criminal justice system.
