Directed at store owners and employees, this audiovisual presentation illustrates how merchandise shortages reduce store profits and thus affect store employees' salaries.
Abstract
Following a brief discussion about merchandising techniques designed to attract customers into the store, the focus turns to illegal losses from other sources. These losses may originate from the loading platform, the stockroom, or behind the counter. Another cause of losses are delivery shortages caused by truckers stealing and shortchanging the deliveries for which they are responsible. Techniques to counteract these problems are detailed, including actions by the receiving clerk to verify the amount of merchandise received, accurate recordkeeping of price changes, and checks made on the contents of any suspiciously retaped cartons before signing for the merchandise. The narrative points out how the dishonest action of one employee can unfairly reflect upon other employees. Reasons why employee steal include personal financial defficulties and mental illness. It is emphasized that by counting correctly, being careful, and being alert, employees can help the store reduce losses and thereby gain benefits for themselves. The package contains color slides and a cassette tape.
