The bookstore manager is led through a series of questions with 'yes' and 'no' options which are directed toward an assessment of current bookstore efforts to thwart shoplifting. An analysis of the self-report questionnaire reveals the overall adequacy of security, the areas where security is weak, and the likelihood that thefts may be employee-related. Analyses of bookstore thieves have indicated no one profile of a bookstore thief, and the articles stolen are a cross sections tactics are described, and ways to spot and stop particular patterns of theft are discussed. A vital step for adequate security requires that a sufficient number of quality employees circulate among the customers. Suggestions for the interior design of the store are offered as well as a list of security equipment and where it can be bought. Elements of the shoplifting laws in each State are indicated. This manual and an accompanying cassette tape and slide program are suggested as resources for training bookstore employees.
