Arizona has 67 city and county jails ranging in age from 1 to over 70 years, and in capacity from 1 to 630 inmates, with a total statewide capacity of 3,999 (a 6 percent increase from 1978). The overall number of city and county jails has remained relatively stable since 1977. However, three new facilities (the Mohave county sheriff's office, the Greenlee correctional facility and the Nogales city jail) were open in 1979. On September 30, 1979, Arizona jails held 2,759 inmates, and increase of 10 percent over the same day in 1978. Males predominated in the jail population, accounting for about 9 out of 10 inmates. However, there was a 17 percent increase in the number of female inmates. The ratio of inmates to jail employees, both full time and part time, was 3.6 to 1 on September 30, 1979. Among the counties, the ratio varied widely; e.g. in on county the number of employees exceeded the number of inmates, while in another, the ration of inmates to employees was 5 to 1. A listing of data by county, annd inmate characteristics for September 30, 1979 are included. Data on juvenile detention centers and jails located on military bases, Indian reservations, and national parks are not included.
