Previous, current, and suggested future research topics of the National Institute of Justice are summarized with regard to community security.
Abstract
A description of the Institute's research framework focuses on its two general categories: research aiming for increased understanding of the problems relating to community security (crime, offender, and victim characteristics, and characteristics of the physical environment or of the social or economic setting) and research aiming to develop effective solutions through individual and collective citizen actions, institutional activities, and evironmental and technological solutions. An overview of previous research findings utilizes the framework categories. It summarizes findings related to community security, highlights their implications for program development, and concentrates on individual citizen actions, collective citizen actions, and the relationships between crime and the environment. Ongoing Institute research is discussed with regard primarily to crime, offender, and victim characteristics, physical environment setting issues, factors relating to the social or economic setting, studies on individual and collective action, and institutional activities. Research topics being projected for future Institute concentration are discussed within the same categories as ongoing Institute research, with additional consideration of implementation and evaluation methodologies to be developed. A table classifies previous, current, and possible future Institute research on community security.
