The report was prepared for LEAA's Office of Criminal Justice Education and Training. Objectives included tracing the growth of and justifying the need for the development of college-level curricula in the forensic sciences, formulating recommendations for dealing with major problem areas in forensic science higher education, preparing program descriptions which are responsive to these problems, and making cost estimates for the implementation of the programs. In order to achieve these objectives, current literature concerning forensic science education was reviewed, and a workshop for leading forensic science educators as well as a survey of other educators in this field were conducted. Each of the 13 workshop and 225 survey participants was requested to identify problem areas and suggest programs designed to remedy them. The report recommends that a 5-year forecast of higher education needs and a review of the careers of recent graduates of forensic science educational programs should be made so that a 5-year educational program for the future may be developed. In addition, students enrolled in selected forensic science programs should receive financial support.
