State court administrative offices have developed during the last 30 years to become important forces in court improvement efforts in the 50 States. In 27 States, such offices are less than 10 years old. The National Advisory Commission and the American Bar Association both advocate education and training in court management and public administration for court administrators. Most current administrators are legally trained professionals, who are responsible for financial administration, personnel administration, and collection of caseload information and statistics. Other duties of these offices include general management assistance, research, education, and legislative liaison and secretarial services. Data on specific offices were obtained through a questionnaire survey. For each State, the monograph presents both general information and descriptions of functions in each general duty area. Additional charts provide comparative data on the roles played by different States' administrators. A selected bibliography lists 129 references.
