This volume presents the texts of general session speeches and invitational papers from a 1974 Ohio conference on runaway youth and provides a critical analysis of the conference's process and proceedings.
Abstract
The conference goal was to educate the community regarding adolescents in flight and to create a positive climate for making basic changes in social programs for runaway youth and their families. Participants included community agency staff, youths, and community members concerned with the problem of adolescent runaways. Topics included voluntary youth advocacy and treatment programs, family life education, juvenile justice, youth values and beliefs, and youth and schools. Invitational papers examined characteristics of runaways, the runaway girl, and youth flight and family authority. Additional papers presented a manifesto on youth liberation and described adolescent- centered programming and services. Emergency housing, crisis counseling, and other programs were also discussed. The conference preparations and progress are examined critically. An epilogue presents an evaluation of the conference and discusses issues raised at the conferences. An appendix presents the program schedule, lists of conference sponsors and working committees, a summary report of each topic area, and texts of the youth liberation platform and the youth bill of rights.
