Results are reported from an evaluation of the Computer Aided Dispatching System (CAD) used by the Huntington Beach Police Department (Calif.).
Abstract
The initial objectives of the CAD were to increase the efficiency and safety of the officer in the field, to increase efficiency in the communications command center, and to provide management information data. The evaluation goal was to determine if these objectives have been met. Evaluation data were obtained through personal interviews with several persons directly associated with the CAD system from its inception in capacities of testing and overseeing the entire operation and through records analysis. Results show that the objectives set for the system have been achieved. In comparing the CAD system to the older manual system, reseachers found an increase in communications efficiency in providing management information data. Recommendations are suggested for future research in the effectiveness of the CAD system and its expanded use in police departments of various types. Supplementary information and sample forms used in the CAD system are appended. Tabular and graphic data and 11 references are provided. (Author abstract modified)
