Six police officers and one FBI agent died in Ohio as a result of felonious acts. Assaults on police oficers rose 26.7 percent from 1978, to 3,445. The three most common assault situations were stopping cars, transporting prisoners, and answering disturbance calls. The reported crime index in Ohio was 524,224, and increase of 8.6 percent over 1978. Violent crimes, murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault numbered about 47,000. The remaining crimes were property offenses--burglar, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Violent crime increased 9.7 percent from 1978 and property crime, 8.5 percent. However, murder increased 16 percent, the largest increase for any crime. In 1979, arrests increased 2.4 percent for a total of 331,240; juveniles accounted for 26 percent and whites, 77 percent. However, only 101,000 offenses were cleared, an increase of 3.1 percent over 1978, but a proportionate decrease from 20 to 19 percent. Murders were cleared most often, burglaries least.
