Direct expenditures include salaries, wages, fees, and commissions; purchases of supplies, materials, and services; and capital outlays for construction, equipment, and land. The first section presents statewide expenditure data by level of government and type of activity. Another section compares the State's expenditures to those of other 'high crime' States, and trends in criminal justice spending are also examined. Finally, a breakdown of expenditures by county is presented. Overall, criminal justice expenditures totaled $278,994,000---56 percent for police protection, 24 percent for corrections, 11 percent for judicial activities, and the remainder for such activities as legal services and prosecution. Municipalities accounted for 39 percent of Arizona's criminal justice expenditures, counties for 32 percent, and the State for 29 percent. Arizona spent 13 percent of its total government funds on criminal justice activities, the third highest proportion in the country. Tables, graphs, and charts illustrate the data.
