Statistics cover Index offenses, violent crimes, property crimes, murder/nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, aggravated assault, and the value of property stolen and recovered. Information is also given on the age, sex, and race of persons arrested. In 1978, one police officer, an employee of the Kansas Highway Patrol, was killed in the line of duty. Crime Index offenses decreased by 0.29 percent, from 104,341 in 1977 to 104,110 in 1978. Violent crimes increased by 3.2 percent over 1977, from 7,137 to 7,362; murder and robbery decreased and rape and aggravated assault increased. Property crimes decreased by 0.5 percent in 1978, from 97,204 to 96,748; burglary and motor vehicle theft increased slightly and larceny decreased by 1 1/2 percent. In addition, the value of stolen property totaled $34,599,350 in 1978, and the value of property recovered in 1978 totaled $13,066,883. There were 70,063 total arrests in 1978, a decrease of 6.7 percent from 1977; most arrests were for Class II offenses. Also, 1,001 assaults on Kansas law enforcement officers were recorded in 1978, compared to 1,107 in 1977.
