The results of research aimed at developing new blood individualization techniques and information on existing techniques are presented in this report.
Abstract
First, population frequencies for the isoenzymes esterase-D and carbonic anhydrase-C in the Pittsburgh area were determined. These statistics may be incorporated into a national survey which is presently being conducted. Second, Gm typing statistics were initiated, although sufficient quantity and quality of antisera in the United States limited such efforts. As part of this research, a pilot study was conducted to eliminate a time consuming step requiring fresh indicator cells and antisera. Third, additional data on a new sex determination technique was collected in order to further demonstrate the validity of this test. Fourth, a technique for the determination of drugs in a bloodstain was developed. The technique also works with digoxin and morphine. Fifth, an improved technique for the isolation and typing of haptoglobins from bloodstains was developed. Sixth, a study of the MN system was continued. Also, several crime laboratory personnel were trained in the development of forensic techniques, and expert technical assistance on several problem cases from various parts of the country was provided. Important results and detailed methodology for the practicing forensic scientist are presented. Data tables, reference lists, and appendixes containing a paper on the isolation of haptoglobins from bloodstains, a paper on the detection of drugs in bloodstains, and information on experimental materials and methods are included.
