Proceedings and evaluation are reported from the North Central Regional Conference sponsored by the National Center for State Courts May 10-11, 1979.
Abstract
Following a presentation of the program agenda and a list of conference participants, the discussions of conference topics are summarized. A panel on statewide court facilities studies reviewed components necessary for any statewide court facilities study, and studies conducted by Illinois, North Carolina, and Missouri were described. A discussion of trends in judicial and non-judicial education reviewed the historical development of judicial education in the United States, and the nature of judicial education programs designed for either orientation or continuing education was examined. Non-judicial education programs in Minnesota were described. In another presentation, court system newsletters were considered as vehicles for courts' internal communications. The basic elements of newsletter design were presented, and comments were made about State newsletters used in States throughout the North Central Region. The 'TV in the Courts' topic was presented in a debate format. The proposition was that 'greater use of cameras in the courts should be permitted.' Basic elements of the pro and con arguments are summarized. Respondents to the conference evaluation questionnaire uniformly expressed satisfaction with the conference and endorsed the idea of regional programs similar to the conference. Materials included in the conferees' packets or distributed during the conference are appended.
