This article describes an approach to a facility inspection program developed by the corporate security department of Levi Strauss and Co., the world's largest garment manufacturer and distributor.
Abstract
The company, with facilities located on 5 continents in more than 25 different nations, operates more than 50 manufacturing facilities and 6 major distribution centers in the United States alone. In addition, the company has numerous regional sales offices, offsite storage facilities, a research and development center, and a corporate headquarters complex housing approximately 1,500 employees. The article describes shortcomings of the former facility inspection system which used a narrative report format, and the design and implementation of a numerical grading system which identified 14 specific categories of physical protection to be graded. It also describes establishing ground rules for category and facilty scoring and some small administrative problems. Benefits included greater interest in the grading system among field managers, briefer inspection reports, and the provision of data to stimulate needed change and measure costs. Tabular data are included.
