The compendium was prepared and distributed as course materials in the various management courses presented by the National College of District Attorneys. Materials appear in a wide variety of formats and approaches designed to give the reader a multiplicity of reading styles and viewpoints. The first chapter discusses the changing nature of prosecutorial office recruitment, methods of assessing the office's needs, location of prospective employees, and the general nature of the recruiting interview. An article on affirmative action and forms and illustrations of job analyses are included. In the second chapter, principles of conducting an employment interview are described; and sample interview forms and spelling tests for clerical personnel are provided. The third chapter discusses the orientation process and provides guidelines on developing and maintaining office policy and procedure manuals. The fourth chapter is designed to relate general management principles to the prosecutor's function. Areas covered include staff motivation, delegation of authority, and labor law related to the public employee sector. The fifth chapter offers a general overview of employee evaluation, standards that apply, methods and forms for applying the standards, and a method for analyzing the personnel evaluation process. A brief summary of paralegals' functions and issues affecting the paralegal movement concludes the volume. Author biographies are included.
