A broad, interdisciplinary approach was used so that the compiled material encompasses not only police literature, but many social science fields as well. Different sections cover law enforcement agencies; field operations--patrol, investigation, traffic, specialized functions, police tactics, and noncriminal police activities; and staff and auxiliary services. Police management, administration, and supervision literature is listed, as well as literature on police personnel management and police education and training. A special section is devoted to community relations, with references on minority groups, racism, slavery, and police operations in ghettos. A section on comparative police studies covers police around the world and presents material on antiterrorist strategy and other treatments of terrorism. Other sections list literature concerning police equipment, issues and problems in law enforcement, the crime problem, and social problems. A miscellaneous section contains reference material and information on the private police industry and other issues. There are 18 parts, 48 chapters, 17,400 entries, and almost 1,100 subheadings. When titles do not adequately describe the content of the document, annotations are included for those materials. Most entries represent books and articles published since 1960. Some foreign literature is cited, primarily from Great Britain. An addendum lists some important studies not included in the main body of the bibliography and an index is supplied.
