METFORS was established in 1977 to provide a new model of a forensic psychiatric service to the criminal justice system. The brief assessement unit provides rapid psychiatric assessments for the courts, usually over a period of 6 hours. Assessment is done by a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, psychiatric nurse, and correctional officer. The patient's involvement is voluntary. The inpatient unit assessed 224 patients during the year; almost 50 percent needed treatment. An inpatient executive committee was formed during the year to monitor standards and progress on the unit. Other departments described include psychology, social work, nursing, recreational therapy, and consultation to the ministry of correctional services. A history of METFORS, a financial report, and appendixes listing staff, articles published, educational and research activities, and related materials are included. A summary of research projects of METFORS and extensive statistical tables are also provided.
