The first essay traces the evolution of victimological studies from their embryonic stage in the 1950's and 60's to their present prominent position in criminology. The second contribution focuses on victim compensation systems in Europe, the United States, and Canada. The third essay refutes popular myths about rape and rape victims and criticizes the patriarchical bias of present Canadian rape legislation from a feminist point of view. In another essay, ritual and traditional physical mutilations inflicted on women (i.e., various forms of clitoridectomy and the Chinese custom of foot binding) are described. A study of the long-term responses of Canadian crime victims to their victimization emphasizing the self-imposed restriction of liberty resulting from fear concludes the collection.
