The 1979 annual report of the Home Office Central Research Establishmemt in Reading, England, covers the activities of the agency's four main divisions.
Abstract
The biology division has experienced a large turnover of staff in the past 2 years as a result of many staff members moving to the operational laboratories. The division's research program covers both research aimed at effecting immediate improvements in the daily operation of departments of forensic biology and longer term studies aimed at resolving problems in forensic serology or at introducing new techniques in forensic science. The report discusses the division's projects in tactical research and strategic research: paint, glass, and fibers; other elemental analysis; fingerprints; drugs and toxicology division's evidential material; and alcohol. The drugs and toxicology division's report notes that much of its work has been related to imminent changes in the Misues of Drugs Act concerning barbiturates. Other projects in this division concern immunoassays, extraction techniques, data collections, and drugs intelligence. The fourth division--the information division--concentrates on activities related to computer programs and information dissemination, as well as implementing a quality assurance program. Appendixes give information about current projects, reports published during 1979, external contracts, colloquia, attachments and teach-ins, lectures and conferences attended by the staff, and visits and visitors.
