Abstract
The first chapter discusses the nomenclature, maintenance, and functioning of single-action and double-action revolvers and of automatic pistols. Numbered illustrations with parts lists are included for the revolver, the pistol, the barrel and its rifling, and the cartridge. The second chapter presents basic rules for handgun safety and definitions of range officer commands. Photographs and a drawing help clarify some of the standard positions. In the third chapter, stable shooting positions are reviewed. Illustrations and footwork diagrams for the basic shooting position and the two-hand shooting position are included. A further illustration helps demonstrate common faults in position. The fourth chapter describes the best ways to grip a handgun and considers the double-action grip, the single-action grip, the automatic pistol grip, and the two-hand grip. Each grip is illustrated, as are common grip hazards. The fifth and sixth chapters consider sighting and aiming, and the seventh chapter discusses trigger finger motion. Various aspects of these procedures are illustrated. In th eighth chapter, self-study techniques are described. These include the calling of shots, the sixth shot warning, the use of the area aiming target, dry shooting, the diagnosing of scores, and the working together of two shooters. The ninth chapter considers breathing techniques. The final chapter discusses a planned practice program which includes muscle building, weak hand practice, range practice, week-by-week activities for 90 days, and followup practice. Each chapter concludes with a section on common faults and a chapter summary. A bibliography and an index are included.
