The 1980 report of activities of the Maryland Public Defender Office includes reports in four main program areas: general administration, district offices, appellate and inmate services, and involuntary institutionalization services.
Abstract
The Public Defender provides legal representation for eligible indigents in criminal and juvenile proceedings within the State of Maryland. Services are provided to such defendants requiring constitutional guarantees of counsel for various proceedings, including arraignments, postconviction proceedings, and appeals. The report first defines the activities of the four program areas. The activities of each of the 12 district offices are presented in separate sections. For each district, information is given concerning the name of the district public defender, the address, total population of the district, number of panel attorneys, number of district courts, number of juvenile courts, and number of criminal courts. Additional information covers the number of cases completed in the various courts, the organization and general operation of the office, and any particular problems encountered during the year. Individual reports are also presented for the divisions of appellate and inmate services, and the involuntary institutionalization division. Tables are included.
