Data are presented on placement histories, furlough participation, escape history, time served, time served by type of release, and scale scores. Women released for the most part did not have the opportunity to participate in the furlough program or to receive a placement in a prerelease facility, even though empty prerelease beds for women have consistently existed. The majority of women had never escaped during their incarceration. A majority served more than 1 month and so were candidates for prerelease. When an analysis was made of the women released from Framingham based on the variables that were found to distinguish successful Charlotte House prerelease placements, the women released from Framingham in 1979 were just as likely to be successes in Charlotte House as those released from that facility. The analysis points up a need to develop a classification process that better enables these eligible women to participate in the graduated release or reintegration programs.
