Using a question and answer format, this manual describes the New York State parole system. It is intended for inmates, parolees, releasees, their families, and practitioners in the field.
Abstract
The introductory section describes the New York sentence structure, the nature of the parole board, and the duties of parole officers. It is followed by a consideration of how to calculate time served, including the definition of good time. Details are provided of the proceedings at parole board hearings and concern release preparation and parole supervision. The parole revocation process is detailed, along with an explanation of the Interstate Compact for Parole, which is an agreement among the 50 States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia that allows persons paroled by one State to be supervised in a sister State. Following an examination of executive clemency, the handbook concludes with a discussion of appeals and access to parole files.
