Length
350 pages

This leader's manual presents a curriculum on child abuse and neglect for community groups.
Abstract
The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect prepared the manual which may be used to orient agency staff members or representatives of the community at large; to increase the knowledge and skills of practicing professionals, support staff, and volunteer workers in inservice training sessions; and to develop participants' skills as a part of a preprofessional curriculum. Individual units focus on background information, the physical and emotional abuse of children, child neglect, child sexual abuse, child protective intervention, the role of the courts in child abuse and neglect, and community planning and coordination to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect. The information presented includes a brief description of each unit; the unit's goals, objectives, and rationale; the unit's activities, with time estimates and required materials; staff, space, equipment, and audiovisuals needed for the unit; preliminary reminders; and required participants' materials. Each unit presents a list of activities for the leader, with key words and phrases and time allotments provided in the margin. The full text of supplementary resource papers, role-play profiles, and instructions and scripts for filmstrips are provided. The curriculum materials include this leader's manual, a book of resource materials, seven filmstrips with cassette recordings, and six films. Reference lists are provided. For the resource manual, see NCJ 73600.
