This is the program manual of the National Neighborhood Watch (NNW), a service of the National Sheriffs' Association which assists State, county and local law enforcement agencies in providing support to citizen self-help crime prevention efforts.
Abstract
The NNW program was instituted in 1972 in response to the requests of many sheriffs and police chiefs for the program that would help them stem the alarming increase in burglaries and vandalism--especially those occurring in rural and suburban residential areas. It brings citizens into action to protect their own property, to join in community crime prevention efforts and to cooperate with their local law enforcement officials. This national program provides technical assistance, program materials, and an information clearinghouse. Information on the implementation of the program, security inspections of private homes and commercial establishments, organizing neighborhoods, property marking programs, citizen crime reporting and citizen patrols, and protection of children and the elderly (such as Helping Hand or Block Parent program) is included. In addition, building security measures into new homes, and distribution of NNW materials (emblems, brochures, etc.) are discussed. Footnotes, a matrix reflecting possible modes of delivery and mediums of communication, and bibliography of 18 references are provided.
