Infomation on the suitability of policewomen's uniforms was obtain through questionnaires returned by 5 police stations and through interviews and correspondence with a random selection of policewomen from 11 other police forces. The results showed that most changes in these uniforms have aimed at 'smartness' rather than practicality. Although skirts are often issued, trousers are essential to policewomen. The hem circumference of most skirts does not allow policewomen to walk with a normal stride and makes running almost impossible. Furthermore, all of the forces surveyed issued soft, decorative hats to policewomen. Such hats offer no protection against blows or missiles; protective headwear with retaining chinstraps would be more appropriate. Many forces issue capes instead of coats to their women officers. Capes are neither warm nor waterproof; they restrict the use of the wearer's arms, make carrying things either difficult or impossible, restrict writing and driving, and allow criminals an opportunity to gain control over the women officers by grabbing the capes or throwing them over the officers' heads. Shoulderbags are another source of problems; the need for carrying these could be alleviated if women's uniforms were equipped with adequate pockets. These deficiencies are not the results of disinterest on the part of chief officers; rather, they persist because of a breakdown in communication between those who must make the decisions regarding uniform design and those who must wear the uniforms.
