Second-year medical students at an Italian university participated in a seminar on juvenile delinquency using their personal experiences and recollections of family life to stimulate discussion of family problems and conflicts as possible causes of juvenile delinquency.
Abstract
Techniques used in the seminar included psychodrama; the viewing and discussion of a relevant movie; scientific readings structured around the seminar's theme; and discussion of a recent Italian law on family rights. The findings of the various inquiries and discussions stimulated by the seminar include the perception of today's family as a filter through which the social experiences of the outside world are passed on to other family members, especially children. All participating students (7 males and 8 females, aged between 19 and 20) agreed that human beings are the product of their environment and education. In general, in today's changing social and family climate, the parents' image and traditional family values are in crisis, which deprives adolescents of the superego support which is needed to resolve oedipal conflicts and to integrate the most archaic elements of the infantile superego. Young people require other role models to build their ideal adult personality. A 12-item bibliography is appended.
