For 1979, 183,964 offenses are recorded, up 3.5 percent from 1978. This increase was mainly in minor crimes, especially petty theft, although larceny and assault rates also rose. The rate of crime solution improved slightly, from 41.4 to 41.8 percent; solution rates are high for violent crimes (69.9 percent) and very low for property offenses (22.6 percent). The number of crime suspects apprehended was 64,001, up 4.2 percent from 1978. More detailed discussions provide figures on types of crimes with rankings by offense groups, on regional distribution of crimes, weapons use, victims, damages, offender characteristics, and residence, juvenile delinquents, and non-German offenders. Statistics are also interpreted by crime types, i.e., violent crimes such as homicide, larceny, rape, assault, drug offenses, blackmarketeering, and drug consumption deaths; violent crimes by juveniles; white collar crimes; property crimes; and offenses against state security. An appendix of extensive tables lists data on offender characteristics, damages by crime type, characteristics, non-German offenders victim characteristics, time distribution of crimes, and relative percnetages of crime types. Maps, graphs, a list of criminal offenses, and a glossary of frequently used terms are furnished.
