Intended for pretrial practitioners and other interested persons, the directory presents an alphabetical listing of programs by State, by city or town within each State, and by name of agency within each city or town. To avoid duplication of the work of specialized agencies, victim/witness, street crime, and juvenile programs are excluded. The directory uses a separate format of each type of program (release, diversion, and mediation/arbitration). Each program description includes the following basic information,: type of program, funding, staffing, interagency cooperation, authorization (e.g., by special grant or by government decision), ultimate administrative/policy responsibility for the program, and description of primary area served. Specific information for programs which provide some form of release services includes types of recommendations made by the program, types of releases supervised/monitored by the program, program action if defendant fails to appear in court, and program authority to release before first court appearance. Some statistical information such as the number of detainees interviewed annually by a program, the number of release recommendations, the number of detainees actually released, and the failure-to-appear rate is made available. Specific diversion infomation for programs which provide adult diversion services is also provided. A map is presented of each State having any formal pretrial programs listed in the directory.
