Some of the major research directions bearing upon the geography of urban crime in Great Britain are discussed.
Abstract
In Britain, there are continuing studies in the spatial ecology tradition which depict further the spatial patterning of offenses and offenders and examine the environmental correlates. While examples can be drawn from the environments of crime commission and crime residence, new research endeavors will probably be focused on the former issue. There are also attempts to use the methodology of residential differentiation as a basis for the systematic analysis of delinquent behavior and the social environments of delinquency areas. Further, there is reserach to identify some of the sociopolitical processes which are antecedents of 'problem areas.' The recent emergence of 'problem estates' as one product of public sector housing has provided a unique opportunity to study the genesis of a delinquency area. Particular British area studies, ecological analyses, and analyses of delinquency areas are briefly described. Graphic data and 95 notes are provided. For related papers, see NCJ 74011.
