Part of the Jail Operations Training Course developed by the Sheriffs' Association and the National Institute of Corrections, this program explores techniques that can help jail officers supervise inmates effectively.
Abstract
Techniques include setting goals for inmates, training them to perform tasks correctly, giving clear orders, and evaluating the behavior and performance of inmates. The program shows inmates and officers in a variety of supervisory situations, such as in cell blocks, work details, and recreational activities. Jail officers can achieve order in the jail through effective supervision of inmates. All jail officers should know the jail's policies and procedures to supervise effectively. In turn, inmates should be given the regulations so that they can obey them. Once goals are set, the officers should organize specific tasks for the inmates to do in order to accomplish the goals. The supervision of inmates can entail a great deal of training. The officers should explain the task to inmates using a step-by-step approach, and give clear, specific orders. Instructions must include what has to be done, where it should be done, and when it should be done. It is important to choose the right inmate for the job. Some inmates require almost constant supervision, while others need very little. Officers should check back periodically to make sure that the job is getting done. When supervising housing units (cell blocks) officers should listen to inmates and must cooperate and come to agreement with staff on other shifts concerning tasks need to be done. A guidebook, slides, and an audiocassette are provided. For other programs in this series, see NCJ 74296-99 and 74301. (Author abstract modified)
