This journal presents articles on preventing terrorist attacks, a counterterrorism training program, and currently available equipment for detecting weapons and explosives.
Abstract
The training program, located in Winchester, Va., provides law enforcement professionals with experience in defensive driving techniques, weapons use, and current counterterrorist tactics. In another paper, ways in which company officials or celebrities can avoid becoming the targets of terrorist or criminal attacks in foreign countries are discussed. Pretrip arrangements, behavior during travel, and low-profile country visits receive attention. A further paper focuses on procedures for preventing terrorist attacks on offices. The design of reception areas, the location of executive offices, types of doors and emergency equipment, and security personnel activities are examined. One paper describes current weapon detector technology for screening individuals for concealed metallic weapons and includes information on the use of magnetic fields to achieve this end. Explosive vapor detectors are the subject of another paper. Electron capture detectors, mass spectrometry detectors, and ion-mobility spectroscopy detectors are discussed; performance criteria are delineated. A final article considers methods of protection against mail bombs; information is also given on the establishment of screening procedures and holding areas and on bomb detection equipment. Some articles provide footnotes and references, and photographs are included. (For separate articles, see NCJ 74480-74484.)
