This paper describes the General Educational Development Program, one of three major components of a project to determine the prevalence of learning disabilities (LD) among nondelinquent and delinquent youth and to diagnose and treat these disabilities.
Abstract
The development component of the project was designed by the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD); the research component, by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). The remediation program was conducted in Baltimore, Md., Indianpolis, Ind., and Phoenix, Ariz. The sample population was drawn from the adjudicated delinquents identified as LD in the prevalence study project component. Remediation was scheduled to take place for a minimum of 1 school year and a maximum of 2 school years. The project focused on preparing participants to take the High School Equivalency Diploma through the General Educational Development (GED) test, an alternative for those not attending school. Because the program focused on academic skills and knowledge, the course of study proved motivational for those youths who were school dropouts. In addition, several incarcerated students elected to continue this alternative plan of education after the project
