This brief legal memorandum presents a model policy and rules for maintaining a cooperative effort between school administrators and law enforcement officials. |
Abstract: |
The policy and rules were developed by the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction. The model policy emphasizes cooperation between school administrators and law enforcement officers while maintaining a respect for students' rights. The model statement of rules covers such areas as conducting an investigation in the educational environment, including questioning students during an investigation for a violation of school rules or for a violation of criminal law; taking a student into custody; and disturbance of the school environment. Other areas discussed are coordination of policies by enforcement officials, and informing school staff members of rules and policies. Commentaries are included in some sections. Footnotes are provided. (Author/ERIC abstract modified) |
